Literary Hub is hiring a Senior Editor to help develop and manage a new site launching in Spring 2027. The vertical will cover the full range of books published each year, fiction and nonfiction, in every category from children’s books.

New editorial role

Literary Hub is hiring a Senior Editor to launch and manage a new vertical, a specialized section of their website, in Spring 2027. This role involves shaping the editorial direction, standards, and workflows from the ground up. The vertical will cover all genres of books published annually, including fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, romance, and personal finance. It will feature opinions from critics, authors, booksellers, librarians, and readers. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, along with enthusiasm for the work. The job is based in New York City but is fully remote, with a starting salary of $72,000 to $75,000 per year and health benefits. The start date is December 1, 2026.

Editorial responsibilities

The Senior Editor will develop and implement an editorial strategy for the new vertical, including setting standards and workflows before and after the launch. The role involves managing three types of content cadences: daily features tied to current events and new book releases, weekly features such as book roundups and trend analyses, and monthly or seasonal features like genre previews, best-of lists, and seasonal topics (e.g., back-to-school or year-end lists). Responsibilities also include commissioning contributions from authors, critics, booksellers, librarians, academics, and other experts, as well as writing and editing articles, reviews, newsletters, and book roundups. The editor will manage assistant editors and freelance writers, oversee assignments and budgets, and create and oversee several weekly newsletters. Collaboration with other sites under Literary Hub, such as Lit Hub, CrimeReads, and Book Marks, is also required.

Required qualifications

Applicants must have at least four years of combined experience in book publishing or book media and online media, with some experience managing people or freelancers. They should demonstrate wide-ranging reading habits and the ability to evaluate books across genres, including literary fiction, romance, or nonfiction guides. Familiarity with online book culture and working knowledge of online publishing tools, such as CMS (Content Management Systems), newsletter platforms, and analytics, are essential. Experience with audience development, digital marketing, social media, and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is also required. Candidates should understand the challenges in publishing, particularly the issue of book discoverability, and ideally have a favorite bookstore and a current library card.

Preferred qualifications

While not mandatory, existing relationships with authors, critics, booksellers, or librarians are considered a plus for applicants. These connections could facilitate the commissioning of content and strengthen the vertical’s reach within the book industry. The role values individuals who already engage with and understand the dynamics of the literary community.

Ce que ça pourrait changer

To apply for the position, candidates must send a resume to jobs@lithub.com. As part of the application, they are required to submit three brief pitches for timely book lists. These pitches should be relevant to current news cycles, seasons, or online conversations. Each pitch must include a compelling headline and at least three potential titles. Examples of timely book lists can be found on the Literary Hub website. The application does not require capsule reviews, but the pitches should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to identify and frame relevant book topics for the target audience.
