Measles outbreak in Pittsburgh

Since August 2026, Pittsburgh and surrounding areas have faced a significant measles outbreak, dominating local news.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 693 measles cases across 38 of the state’s 67 counties as of September 14, 2026, including 133 hospitalizations and four deaths, all among unvaccinated residents.

This marks a sharp increase from just 16 cases statewide in 2025.

The outbreak began with a potential exposure alert at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Allegheny County, where two confirmed cases were diagnosed on August 27, 2026.

The situation has prompted health officials to urge residents to check their vaccination status to prevent further spread.
