Isaias breaks quiet season
Hurricane Isaias became the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026 on October 7, breaking a record for the latest-forming first hurricane since 1905.
The Category 2 storm made landfall near Destin, Florida, on October 9, bringing a 5.6-foot storm surge to Panama City Beach and causing damaging winds and flooding rain as it moved inland toward the Appalachian Mountains.
This event was highly unusual because the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season had been extremely quiet until then, with no hurricanes forming in the first two-thirds of the season.
Typically, by early October, the Atlantic would have already seen five hurricanes, including two major ones.
The storm’s unusual timing and strength raised questions about why it formed when others did not.
