Kirkus Prize overview

The Kirkus Prize is an annual literary award presented by Kirkus Reviews, a publication known for reviewing books across genres.

Established in 2014, the prize honors books of 'exceptional merit' in three categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Young Readers’ Literature.

Each category awards a $50,000 prize to the winning author.

The 2026 winners were selected from a pool of 3,584 fiction titles, 2,806 nonfiction titles, and 3,936 young readers’ titles, all of which had previously received a Kirkus star—a mark given to books deemed outstanding by the publication.

The ceremony took place in New York City on October 7, 2026.

According to Tom Beer, editor-in-chief of Kirkus Reviews, the winning books are notable for their accessibility and transformative impact on readers.
