Résumé
Teen suicide rates
Suicide is a significant issue among American teens, ranking as the third leading cause of death after accidents and homicide.
In Pennsylvania, a 2023 survey of over 190,000 adolescents in grades 6-12 found that 16% of teens reported seriously considering suicide, 13% had made a suicide plan, 5% had attempted suicide, and 1% required medical treatment for a suicide attempt.
These figures highlight that suicidal thoughts and behaviors are alarmingly common among teens, with depression, substance use, and bullying being well-established risk factors.
The survey, called the Pennsylvania Youth Survey, is conducted every two years and anonymously collects data on teens' experiences with family, school, community, mental health, substance use, violence, and suicide risk.
The data provides critical insights into the mental health challenges facing adolescents in Pennsylvania.
