Gravity Seems Holographic. What Does That Mean for Reality?
The biggest breakthrough in modern theoretical physics is the discovery that gravity can collapse the dimensions of space. Physicists don’t yet understand the implications. The post Gravity Seems Holographic. What Does That Mean for Reality? first appeared on Quanta Magazine
Résumé
Holographic principle discovery
In the late 1990s, three foundational papers introduced the AdS/CFT correspondence (short for anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory), a mathematical link between gravity and quantum mechanics.
These papers, published between 1997 and 1998, have since been cited tens of thousands of times, making them the most highly cited theoretical physics works of the digital era.
The correspondence suggests that gravity may eliminate the distinction between volume and area, a broader idea known as the holographic principle.
Physicists like Leonard Susskind described this concept as 'magical' and 'miraculous,' noting it provided a solution to the black hole information paradox, proving that black holes are not inescapable prisons as Stephen Hawking had argued.
