She died at the San Diego border. A surveillance camera was in plain sight

Graciela Gómez Hernández, a 30-year-old woman from southern Mexico, crossed the U.S.-Mexico border near San Diego on September 14, 2025, hoping to work and send money to her three children and parents.

She paid smugglers 20,000 pesos (about $1,150) to guide her, which was much lower than the average cost of $12,000 at the time.

She sent voice messages to her family as she walked, but her final message, sent between 2 and 3 p.m., was a desperate whisper: 'I can’t do it anymore.' Graciela was found dead two weeks later, with most of her body decomposed.

Her family believes she became lost and overwhelmed by the harsh terrain and heat in the Otay Mountain Wilderness, a rugged area just north of the border.
