A group of petroleum-derived compounds—benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene—commonly found in industrial pollution. These chemicals are carcinogenic and toxic to humans, but some microbes have evolved to metabolize them as a carbon source, enabling natural bioremediation.
